Japan Envisions the West: 16th-19th Century Japanese Art from Kobe City Museum

In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the sister-city relationship between Seattle and Kobe, Japan, the Seattle Art Museum is organizing an extensive exhibition of significant artworks from Kobe City Museum. Under the mission statement ?gInternational Cultural Exchange between East and West,?h Kobe City Museum has collected western-style Japanese art created between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries. Namban (art influenced by the Spanish and Portuguese) and Komo (art influenced by the Dutch), as well as a wide variety of maps illustrate how Japanese artists in the pre-modern period understood Western arts and cultures?\encounters that helped them obtain a new perspective on the world. Meanwhile, Japanese works were appreciated among the Western people as exotic items, a perception which explains how the Japanese cultural identity was received in the West. Through paintings, prints, maps, lacquerware, ceramics, textiles, glassware and metalware, the exhibition exemplifies not only how the Japanese and Westerners comprehended and appreciated different cultures in the past, but also asks contemporary audiences important questions about how we perceive people and cultures in the present.
