Kobe Biomedical Innovation Cluster

In 1998, the city of Kobe initiated the Medical Industry Develop Project. The project has fostered cooperation between industrial, academic and government organizations to develop new medical technology and foster breakthrough research and development.

More than 270 companies, such as Johnson & Johnson and St. Jude Medical, conduct research and development on Port Island in fields such as pharmaceuticals, regenerative medicine, medical equipment, biotechnology and general health. There are currently 14 core facilities that make up the R&D zone on Port Island, including the Institute of Biomedical Research & Innovation (IBRI), the Translational Research Informatics Center (TRI) and the RIKEN Center for Developmental Biology (CDB). A well-developed support network provides other services such as commercialization assistance, consulting on pharmaceutical issues, patent assistance, and financing (investment and borrowing) consultation.
