Please join us on Jan. 16 for the Great Hanshin-Awaji (Kobe) Earthquake 20th Anniversary Remembrance Ceremony, a reflective ceremony and ringing of the Kobe Bell in honor of the victims of that terrible disaster that struck Seattle’s sister city of Kobe, Japan on January 17, 1995. The Seattle-Kobe Sister City Association (SKSCA), Kobe Trade Information Office, Hyogo Business & Cultural Center, Japanese Cherry Blossom and Cultural Festival, Japan America Society of the State of Washington, and other Japan-related organizations and friends will gather at 12:00 noon on Friday, January 16, 2015 at the Kobe Bell on the Seattle Center grounds.

Seattle residents gathered at the Kobe Bell 20 years ago when the earthquake struck, and the SKSCA and other Japan-related groups have held bell ringing ceremonies since then to remember victims and show support to our sister city and its surrounding communities. Seattle residents also gathered at the Kobe Bell after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami in Tohoku, Japan.

The program will include remarks from Japanese Consul General Masahiro Omura and other dignitaries, a moment of silence, bell ringing, and a gathering in the nearby Armory Building to view some photos from the earthquake.

Bamboo Lanterns for Kobe’s 20th Anniversary Memorial

2014/12/18 News

January 17, 2015 will mark the 20th Anniversary of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake.

Today, our office sent a set of bamboo lanterns with prayers and wishes written by the people of the Seattle area to Kobe.

The calligraphy and paper art seen inside the top sections of the four lanterns was done by a local paper artist, who is originally from Kobe, Ms. Sachi Tanimoto.

Among the more than 100 signatures are Ed Murray, the Seattle Mayor, and Masahiro Ohmura, the Consul General of Japan in Seattle. We wish to thank everyone who signed the lanterns! The people of Kobe greatly appreciate Seattle’s support both during the immediate recovery and in the present day.

The bamboo lanterns were made from a single piece of bamboo. As you can see, it was a little difficult to cut! /

They’re finally complete! /

Ms. Tanimoto, the artist who graciously made the paper art and Japanese characters for the lanterns. Thank you!

The lanterns were on display during the Japan-America Society’s Holiday Party on December 2, 2014. / 12

Thank you to everyone who took the time to write a message at the party and elsewhere! /

From November 8th to 22nd, the first exchange between the International Community School (ICS) in Kirkland, WA and Kobe took place. We look forward to keeping this new exchange going for many years to come.

Kobe Band “Singalong Parade” Plays in Las Vegas

2014/11/07 Events, News

Last year, Kobe started a new contest called “Battle de egg” for bands to compete. The winning band plays a live concert in Las Vegas. On November 7th, this year’s winner (Singalong Parade) performed, as did last year’s winner, VINO. Our office accompanied the band and even had the chance to meet the coordinator on the Las Vegas side of this program. We look forward to continuing this program in the future for many years to come!

IMEX America Trade Show

2014/10/30 News

From October 14th to 16th, our office attended the IMEX America 2014 trade show for incentive travel, meetings, and events in Las Vegas. IMEX America is the biggest trade show of its kind in the US with 2,900 exhibitors and 10,000 attendees over the course of the three day event. The City of Kobe is working to attract more conventions to the city, and this convention helped our office to connect with a lot of possible partners for the future.
